2024 - Owl Box Project

The Diablo Woodworkers (DWW) club was involved in a community project at Ranch Laguna Park, collaborating with the town of Moraga, the Moraga Parks and Recreation Department, and the Moraga Garden Club.

The project was conceived as biological control to a rodent problem at the park. Humane Wildlife Solutions, Inc., in Moss Landing CA, provided plans for the boxes.

DWW club member Jim Fleming drew up plans, followed by project approval by the city of Moraga, and support from Parks and Recreation Department, and from the Diablo Woodworkers volunteers (David Lipscomb, Joe Hirt, Craig Bender, Philip David, Duke Herrera, Spencer Schilling, Jeff Traeger, and Alan Coyle).

The boxes were installed at Ranch Laguna Park and at the nearby Commons West, a public sculpture park.

This is just one example of how members can get involved with a DWW Community Project. If interested, log on to the DWW website, go to your profile, and select “Interests” (lower right corner). You will be emailed when there is a community project opportunity. There is no obligation if the timing or project doesn’t work for you.

2024 - Valley View Wood Shop Revitalization

Several members of the Diablo Woodworkers contributed to revitalizing a dormant wood shop at Valley View Middle School, which had been unused for over 9 years. Nicole Manasewitsch, a teacher at the school, spearheaded a grassroots effort to raise funds to restore the shop to working condition.

Several groups, including the DWW, came together to donate a Saw Stop table saw to support this initiative. Club members David Lipscomb, Don Dupont, and Joe Hirt were present in February 2024 to introduce the new saw to the class.  The Diablo Woodworkers also helped by setting up the shop, building scroll and miter saw stations, sharpening tools including chisels and planes and maintaining the band saws.

Students at the middle school can now enroll in woodworking as an elective, which has quickly gained popularity.  Other members of DWW, including Kent Ball, have provided ongoing support as teaching assistants.
