About this event

Our November speaker will be Greg Mix, a fellow Diablo Woodworker who has enjoyed woodworking since childhood. His work is primarily furniture and occasional home improvement projects. In 2015, he increased his focus on furniture after retiring from a career in the production homebuilding industry. He is also an architect.
Greg is primarily self-taught and has refined his skills in Brian Condran’s Master Series Class. Much of his work is in the Arts and Crafts style.

In his presentation, he’ll share the story behind the set of eight maple dining chairs he designed and recently finished, to match a bird’s-eye maple table he also built. His presentation will cover his design process, wood selection, attention to grain direction, joinery techniques, and the shaping challenges he encountered along the way.

Reviving Woodshop Education in Pleasant Hill

Also presenting at this meeting is Nicole Manasewitsch. Nicole teaches woodshop at Valley View Middle School in Pleasant Hill.

A proud graduate of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD), Nicole is also celebrating her 20th year as a teacher in the district. Her passion for woodworking began as a middle school student at Foothill, where she took woodshop all three years. When she discovered that her high school had eliminated most of its hands-on courses, she continued her interest independently, becoming a lifelong wood hobbyist. While in college, she worked at child care facilities and summer programs not only performing construction, but also introducing elementary students to carpentry and woodworking. More recently, she has taken several woodworking classes through MDUSD Adult Education, including Woodworking 1 and 2, furniture restoration, woodturning, scroll saw work, and carving.
