About this event

Speaker: Jim Fleming
Topic: The Barn Owl Nesting Community Project

Jim’s presentation will cover the recent construction and installation of barn owl nesting boxes in two Moraga parks. Diablo Woodworkers adopted this effort as a beneficial community project and provided most of the labor for construction of the boxes.

Barn owls are prolific hunters of rats, gophers, and other rodents, which they eradicate without the use of poisons or pesticides which may endanger other wildlife.  The latter is particularly important because one of the parks has become a migration refuge for the beautiful and endangered Monarch butterfly.  Installation of the boxes has recently been completed, just in time for barn owl nesting season.

Jim is a retired trial lawyer and Temporary Judge of the San Francisco Superior Court.  During his 45+ years of law practice, Jim represented construction companies, financial institutions, and pro bono litigants in trial and appellate courts across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jim’s woodworking history started with a Cub Scout shoeshine box, progressed to a Ford Foundation award for a Junior High lathe project and on to a lifetime of furniture and gifts for children and adults.  Jim is a longtime member of Diablo Woodworkers and previously served on the Board.  He has taken numerous classes from Dave Greenhill, Tim Killen and Brian Condran, as well as seminars with guest artisan woodworkers.
