About this event

Dominique Charmot is happily retired in Napa since 2015 and has been busy building stuff in his one car garage shop. Trained as a polymer chemist he moved with his family to the US in 2000, branched out to biology and co-founded two successful biotech companies in Silicon Valley.

Like any hobbyist he started by emulating known furniture makers, such as Thos Moser. While visiting the “Musee des arts decoratifs” in Paris, his hometown, he fell in awe with the “Art Nouveau” style, exemplified by Louis Majorelle or Hector Guimard. This became a great source of inspiration in creating a series of desks, chairs, showcases, etc...

His work was awarded at the Artistry in Wood and he got his profile published in West Woodworker magazine in 2023. His style keeps evolving towards minimalistic curved structures. Earlier this year, he invested in CAD and a CNC machine and set out to create furniture that would otherwise be challenging to build by hand. He also explored the addition of carbon fiber composite elements from structural and esthetic perspectives.

At the meeting he will present a short overview of his creations and will focus on the use of CAD / CNC in the creation of a wood / carbon fiber armchair.
